Scott Neal
“Neal
at the Cross”
A word from Scott Neal
Scott Patrick Neal was raised in Houston, Texas. At the time his father
abandoned he and his mother, his 2 older brothers had already left home. Scott,
11 years old at the time, would now be raised in a single parent home by his
very loving and supportive mother, who would prove to be his greatest source
of strength and encouragement. One year later at the age of twelve, Scott went
to work for Kentucky Fried Chicken everyday after school, to serve his mother
and supplement their monthly income. He grew to be a natural servant and would
be elected leader by his peers to various school and sporting organizations. He
went on to become involved and elected president of the local chapter of The
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, yet still managing to work every evening at
KFC to help his mom. He would come to discover that the love and talent he had
for sports he inherited from his father, whom he still had no relationship with,
but was unknowingly” following in his footsteps.” Scott, now 18 and
captain of his high school football team, was enjoying a record winning year!
Following the win of his senior homecoming game that now headed the team to state,
a strange man whom he didn’t recognize greeted him on the side line and
said, “Congratulations, son.”
That moment would begin an on again, off again relationship that Scott would
pursue with his dad, in hopes of receiving the affirmation he had always needed.
Still with that unmet longing in his heart, he left home and headed off to Stephen
F. Austin University where he, just like his dad, played college football as
offensive tackle for 5 years. Always wanting to serve and make a difference,
his senior year he was elected and served as president to his fraternity. After
college graduation in 1986, he transitioned his food service experience and became
employed with Luby’s Cafeteria, where
he has been employed ever since. After a long battle, Scott lost his greatest
source of unconditional love to cancer. He credits the Lord for blessing him
with a mother who was a constant source of stability in his life. His relationship
with his father ended in peace in 2001, as Scott took his father’s hand
on his death bed, told him he loved and forgave him, just before he took his
last breath.
The next four years were filled with intense searching, very much like the deep,
endless longing to be affirmed by his father who no longer lived on the earth.
Then one night, after the years of emptiness and loneliness had taken its toll,
Scott cried out to a God he had only heard of, and asked the Lord to please show
Him the Father he longed for. That very night, God made Him self very real to
Scott, filling him with the Holy Spirit and affirming him as His son. The longing
in Scott’s heart was finally filled, and a peace that passes all understanding
now dwelled within him. God has always had his hand of favor upon Scott and has
blessed him with a heart of compassion for fatherless children. Out of gratitude
and obedience to the Lord, Scott has given his life in service to others once
again, but this time, in the greatest way of all….by following in His” Heavenly
Father’s footsteps” in spreading the gospel.
Scott is an ordained minister and is genuinely passionate about the ministry
Heroes for Kiddos and Widows. He has 2 grown sons, Devan and James, who
ironically enough, call him their “Hero……”
